Dr. Angela Ferguson, psychologist and consultant to LSN’s Trauma Research Team, attends a conference on managing stress in humanitarian aid workers to learn and share information relevant to LSN’s training of outreach workers engaging in peer support activities with other landmine survivors in our networks.

Algeria. Algeria becomes the 122nd country to ratify the Mine Ban Treaty.

Nigeria. Nigeria becomes the 142nd country to accede to the Mine Ban Treaty.

LSN Networks. Rehabilitation Services Directories, in respective languages, are completed by LSN Networks in Bosnia-Herzegovina, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Jordan and Mozambique. The directories are to be used by LSN Outreach Workers, Service Providers and Governments, to identify services available to persons with disabilities.

New York, NY. LSN Advocacy and Education Director Becky Jordan participates in a UN-hosted meeting to discus a study being conducted for the United Nations Mine Action Service. The study is a review of the role of mine action in providing assistance to victims of mines and unexploded ordnance.

Managua, Nicaragua. LSN cancels non-essential travel due to the tragic events of September 11th. As a result, LSN DC staff are unable to attend the Third States Parties Meeting in Nicaragua. Although LSN DC does not attend the meeting, LSN El Salvador Director Jesús Martinez and survivors from the region participate in LSN’s Raising the Voices program, coordinated by LSN Advocacy Associate, Raquel Willerman.

Washington, DC. LSN creates three new pamphlets for the Surviving Limb Loss series to address diabetes and vascular disease, children with limb loss, and upper extremity amputation. This completes a comprehensive set of 13 pamphlets that addresses all aspects of limb loss.

Washington, DC. Jerry White and veteran landmine survivors meet with aides from offices of Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Senator Max Cleland (D-GA) during USCBL Lobby Day, September 6, 2001, to promote support for Mine Ban Treaty and victim assistance.

Eritrea. Eritrea becomes the latest country to accede to the Mine Ban Treaty. 141 countries have signed the treaty, but the United States has not.

Amman, Jordan. LSN-Jordan hosts a two-day running clinic for Jordanian amputees along with their prosthetists, doctors and therapists. The clinic is led by Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler, both Para-Olympic athletes.

Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Jerry White travels to Tuzla, where LSN-Bosnia-Herzegovina hosts the Third Annual Princess Diana Sitting Volleyball Tournament. The tournament is a resounding success with 8 international teams competing. The Zenica-Doboj Cantonal team wins the tournament, and will be invited to next year's tournament to defend the title.

LSN co-Founder Ken Rutherford, and colleague Stefan Brem, publish Comparing Landmines and Small-Arms Campaigns in Security Dialogue (Volume 32, Number 2, June 2001). The article poses the question of whether the debate on small arms and light weapons should or could ‘walk together’ with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines model in its relatively successful effort to ban landmines.

Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina.  Her Majesty Queen Noor, accompanied by LSN Executive Director Jerry White, traveled to Tuzla to visit the LSN BiH Network.  During the visit, Her Majesty and Jerry witnessed a demining demonstration, met with survivors and heard the Mine Awareness competition winner, an elementary school student, read her essay about landmines.

Nicaragua.  LSN Advocacy Associate Raquel Willerman traveled to three villages in Nicaragua to visit three of landmine survivors who participated in the Raising the Voices training in Geneva.  She observed some of their activities as survivor advocates and provided support and advice for their future projects.

Geneva, Switzerland.  As facilitator for the ICBL-WGVA, LSN Advocacy and Education Director Becky Jordan helped develop the agenda for the May Intersessional meetings of the Mine Ban Treaty in Geneva, Switzerland.  She also spoke to the Standing Committee on Victim Assistance (SCVA) about Raising the Voices, a project designed to include landmine survivors in the Ottawa Process.  In addition, Becky spoke to the SCVA about the current status of Psychological Interventions for Landmine Survivors.

May 2001
Geneva, Switzerland. Raising the Voices. LSN coordinated the participation and training of eight landmine survivors from Latin America (El Salvador, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, and Chile) in the debut of this program at the May, 2001 Intersessional meetings of the Mine Ban Treaty in Geneva, Switzerland. These survivors learned how to participate in the Ottawa Process and received training to help them advocate in their home countries for landmine survivors and other people with disabilities.

Washington, DC. Her Majesty Queen Noor and Jerry White met with Secretary of State Colin Powell during Ban Landmines Week to discuss the landmine issue and encourage the U.S. to take steps to comply with the landmine ban. Her Majesty introduced Secretary Powell to 17-year old Cambodian survivor Song Kosal, who came to Washington as leader of the Youth Against Landmines Campaign to deliver roughly 500,000 petitions calling on the U.S. to ban landmines.

Laurel, MD. LSN Co-Founder and Executive Director Jerry White delivers closing remarks at the first ever American Amputee Hockey Association amputee hockey match featuring teams from Russia, Canada and the United States. The event took place at the Gardens Ice Arena during Ban Landmines Week.

Washington, DC. Her Majesty Queen Noor, Patron of Landmine Survivors Network, testifies before Congressional Human Rights Caucus at Briefing in support of proposed Victim Assistance Bill. LSN El Salvador Director, Jesús Martinez and Ugandan Landmine Survivor Margaret Arach give personal testimonies on how they became landmine survivors.

Washington, DC. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) holds its semi-annual general meeting in the US. In honor of the ICBL’s presence in D.C., the USCBL, chaired by LSN, organizes a week of high-visibility events designed to bring the issue of landmines and victims to public attention. These include a rally outside the While House, a USCBL/ICBL plenary meeting, a press conference, an inter-faith prayer service, and a reception for mine ban campaigners, members of Congress, members of the diplomatic corps, and executive branch officials.

College Park, MD. Jerry White speaks to 200 high-school students attending the National Student Leadership Foundation's Mastering Leadership Conference at the University of Maryland. Jerry addressed leadership topics such as: leaders have a powerful vision, leaders being committed to their vision, leaders live by values that are consistent with their vision, leaders are inspirational and empowering, leaders are risk takers, leaders see all obstacles as opportunities, leaders are wise thinkers and have strength of character, and leaders develop leadership in others.

Washington, DC. LSN hosts its first annual Directors Seminar focusing on Director Roles and Responsibilities within LSN, Management Training, Advocacy Training and participation in Washington DC’s Ban Landmines Week.

Washington, DC. LSN hosts its first annual Social Worker Seminar focusing on Social Worker Roles and Responsibilities with LSN, Methods of Self-Protection from Secondary Trauma and Trauma Research. Seven Social Workers from each of the six network countries attend.

Amman, Jordan. Jordan Network Social Worker Kawkab Atalleh conducts workshop for Outreach Workers on the topic of diabetic patients and diabetic complications.

Los Angeles, CA. LSN Advocacy Associate Raquel Willerman conducts interviews with 13 amputees as part of Trauma Research project. The experience and data gathered from these American interviews will be used to design the interview protocol to be used for the research in LSN Network countries.
