Her Majesty Queen Noor, LSN Patron, was keynote speaker at the World Bank Conference: Disability and Development on December 3. Her Majesty called for a UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities.

December 2002 – Amman, Jordan and Damascus, Syria. The LSN Advocacy team engaged in a training regarding advocacy work in general and the convention development process in particular. The convention awareness training in Syria was for NGOs and government representatives.

Ottawa, Canada. Becky Jordan, chair of the Working Group on Victim Assistance, attended a symposium to discuss progress made in the last five years on the Mine Ban Treaty, and progress to be made in the coming five years.

Long Beach, Laguna Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, California. Raquel Willerman and Margaret Arach, Ugandan landmine survivor, spoke with approximately 400 International Baccalaureate (IB) students at three separate high schools in California. For the last two school years IB schools through the US and Canada have been raising awareness and money for Landmine Survivors Network and Adopt-A-Minefield.

New York, New York. Jerry White, co-founder and Executive Director of LSN and Janet Lord, Legal Counsel and Director of Advocacy, met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio de Mello, to discuss the engagement of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the convention development process.

Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. Janet Lord, Legal Counsel and Director of Advocacy, was sent by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to participate in a UNDP-sponsored project (implemented by the China Disabled Persons’ Federation), by training rights protection workers who work with people with disabilities.

Sapporo, Japan. Ken Rutherford, LSN Co-founder and board member, and Kathy Guernsey, International Law Consultant, attended the Disabled Peoples’ International 6th World Assembly from October 15- October 18, 2002. They networked with key NGO groups and other representatives (e.g. from inter-governmental bodies), assisted in the drafting and presentation of a resolution in support of the convention for consideration by the DPI World Council and possible transmittal to UN Secretary-General, and Dr. Rutherford gave two presentations.

Quelimane, Mozambique. LSN-Mozambique Consultant, David Thomforde, Consultant and Research Analyst from Prosthetic Research Study, Laura Willingham, and LSN-Mozambique Network Associate, Anne Hayes, facilitated the Peer Support Training for the Outreach Workers.

Amman, Jordan. LSN-Jordan, in coordination with ICRC, organized a Surgeon’s Workshop to increase the knowledge about amputation surgery and to emphasize the importance of cooperation between all doctors.

Amman, Jordan. Christine Manula, LSN Outreach Coordinator, led a trip designed to showcase the work of LSN in Jordan. Participants included Jerry White, LSN Executive Director; Board Members Jane Olson and Ross Sherbrooke; and LSN friends. While in Jordan the group was introduced to a variety of mine actions programs, including a demining demonstration with the Royal Jordanian Corps of Engineers; visits with survivors at a local hospital, prosthetic clinic and sports center; and meetings with LSN government funders (U.S., Norway and Canada).

Pittsburgh, PA. Jerry White, Executive Director, was guest speaker at a Pennsylvania Peace Links meeting on September 8, 2002. Peace Links promotes international understanding and cooperation, conflict resolution, and the concentration of world-wide resources on social and environmental needs.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Dr. Beth Sperber Richie, Principal Investigator of the Trauma Research Team, attended the second working conference “Managing Stress of the Humanitarian Aid Worker: An Integrated Approach.” The conference was sponsored by the Antares Foundation, The Netherlands, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, USA.

New York, New York. The Advocacy Team attended meetings at the UN, organized by the Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR), to learn more about the disability human rights monitoring project being coordinated by CIR in conjunction with other NGOs.

Towson, Maryland. LSN staff attended the Fall Gathering of Presbyterian Women to introduce the women, who had gathered from all parts of Maryland, to the landmine issue and to offer suggestions on how they can get involved. The theme of the conference was “What Can I Do Lord?” and the women were very receptive to the information and eager to learn what they can do to alleviate the landmine problem.

Seattle, Washington. Ken Rutherford, Co-Founder and board member of LSN, and Christine Manula, Advocacy Associate, attended a conference hosted by the US Department of State, Office of Mine Action Initiatives and Partnerships, and the Mine Action Information Center at James Madison University in Seattle. LSN’s representatives provided information and discussed LSN's services and activities within the US and abroad.

Martha’s Vineyard, Maine. Jerry White, Executive Director, attended an LSN landmine awareness party on Martha's Vineyard at the home of Elliot Kronstein and May Baldwin.

Victoria, BC, Canada. Ken Rutherford, LSN Co-founder and Board Member and Glenna Fak, Communications Assistant, attended the International Baccalaureate North America (IBNA) Conference from July 18-22. The IBNA Schools raised approximately $60,000 dollars for LSN and Adopt-A-Minefield during the last school year and agreed to extend the Service Campaign for another year.

Kabul, Afghanistan. Raquel Willerman, Advocacy Associate, coordinated survivor participation in the international conference: “Building a Peaceful Future for Afghanistan: A Total Ban on Anti-Personnell Mines” from July 27-31. During the conference, Afghanistan announced its commitment to join the Mine Ban Treaty.

Orono, Maine. Dr. Beth Sperber Richie, Psychologist and Principal Investigator of the Trauma Research Team, attended the Psychologists for Social Responsibility Conference on psychosocial programs in areas of ethno-political conflict at the University of Maine from July 24﷓29, 2002. The conference focused on best practices in needs assessment, planning, interventions and evaluation for programs that provide psycho﷓social humanitarian assistance to survivors of trauma.

July 2002 – New York, New York. Janet Lord, Legal Counsel and Director of Human Rights Programs, Zahabia Adamaly, Human Rights Program Officer, Kathy Guernsey, International Law Consultant, Elaine Belmear, Human Rights Program Associate, Joelle Balfe, Consultant on Disability and Human Rights and Kirsten Young, European Human Rights Liaison attended the first meeting of the UN Ad Hoc Committee tasked with the development of an international convention on the human rights of persons with disabilities. International and national NGOs established themselves at this meeting as key collaborators in this UN process. The Committee will begin to examine in the coming year the key elements and issues that must be addressed in the convention.

Washington, DC. LSN participated in an educational and strategic forum on June 12, 2002, to inform the leaders of American grassroots disability groups about international human rights tools and their relationship to U.S. disability legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, and to outline opportunities these groups have to support active and positive U.S. participation in the convention-development process.

Tuzla, Bosnia. LSN-Bosnia hosted the annual Core Staff Training from June 23-30, 2002. All six of the Networks were present and relationships among the Networks and among LSN-DC and the Networks were strengthened.

Geneva, Switzerland. Becky Jordan, Advocacy and Education Consultant, Raquel Willerman, Advocacy Associate and Maria Gomez, Psychologist and Trauma Research Consultant, attended the Standing Committee meetings from May 27 to May 31.

Geneva, Switzerland. Maria Gomez, Psychologist and Trauma Research Consultant, gave a presentation on the Trauma Research teams’ findings during the Standing Committee meeting on Victim Assistance and Socio-Economic Reintegration.

Geneva, Switzerland. Raquel Willerman, Advocacy Associate, reviewed accessibility, literacy and economic reintegration and introduced new participants in the Raising the Voices program during the Standing Committee meeting on Victim Assistance and Socio-Economic Reintegration.

Severna, Maryland. Christine Manula, Advocacy Associate, Karen Welter, Communications Coordinator, Glenna Fak, Communications Assistant, and Claudia Garman, Rutherford Fellow, traveled to Severna High School to accept a $1,000 donation. Students affiliated with the schools International Club participated in several fundraising activities, such as a car wash and a bake sale, to raise the money.

Albuquerque, New Mexico. Christine Manula, Advocacy Associate, spoke to an International Baccalaureate School. The IB School is part of the larger IB network of schools currently raising money for LSN and Adopt-A-Minefield.

Tuzla, Bosnia. LSN-Bosnia-Herzegovina hosted a Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, which is designed to show the benefits sports have on persons with disabilities and to raise awareness about disabilities in general.

Paris, France. Becky Jordan, Education and Advocacy Consultant, facilitated two workshops on advocacy for victim assistance during the global meeting of the Landmine Monitor researchers in Paris.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. LSN Advocacy Team held a human rights advocacy training in Ethiopia.

Washington, DC. Two meetings took place in which the human rights community in the US and disability activists participated in activities to advance efforts to create a convention on the rights of persons with disabilities. LSN is playing a key role in this movement.

Washington, DC. Her Majesty Queen Noor, International Patron and Honorary Chair, met with Senators on Capitol Hill April 11th, and succeeded in securing bi-partisan support for international disability and victim assistance legislation.

Ocotal, Nicaragua. Advocacy Associate, Raquel Willerman, conducted a grant-writing training for graduates of the first cycle of Raising the Voices.

Washington, DC. Janet Lord, Legal Counsel for International Human Disability Rights, drafted a white paper for the National Council on Disability. The white paper is similar to a position paper and it outlines reasons why the US should be involved in creating a convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

San Francisco, CA. Jerry White, Executive Director, participated in the Global Philanthropy Forum sponsored by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the TOSA Foundation. The forum’s purpose is to inspire, enable, and expand international giving.

Executive Director Jerry White, accompanied by board members Vin Ryan and Ross Sherbrook, leads an investigative mission to Ethiopia to raise awareness of the devastation caused by landmines, to urge the Ethiopian government to ratify the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty and to witness landmine survivor outreach workers in action as they provide rehabilitation support to Ethiopian mine victims.

Geneva, Switzerland. Advocacy Associate Raquel Willerman coordinates the participation of 7 survivors from Africa in Raising the Voices training. The survivors are the second group of participants in Raising the Voices, the first group being from Latin America.
