Summary of Major Findings from Landmine Monitor 2002

Each year, as part of Mine Ban Treaty monitoring, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines collects data from around the world on the landmine situation. The results are publised in a report, which is a comprehesive review of demining efforts and landmine incidents. Following are major findings from this year\'s report.

  • New landmine or unexploded ordnance (UXO) accidents were were found in 70 countries

  • There were at least 7,987 new landmine or UXO casualties, however, this does not include the thousands of casualties that go unreported because victims are killed or injured in remote areas. The casualty number is expected to total 15,000 - 20,000.

  • Forty-six of the 70 countries that reported new landmine casualties were not engaged in conflict in 2002.

  • No concrete evidence of antipersonnel landmine use by any countries that have signed or ratified the Mine Ban Treaty was reported.

  • Two hundred thirty million antipersonnel mines are stockpiled in the arsenels of approximately 94 countries.

  • In the past decade, 61 countries have destroyed approximately 34 million antipersonnel mines.

  • Nearly 80% of the total in stockpile destroyed so far has been destroyed to comply with the Mine Ban Treaty.

  • Approximately $237 million was allocated for mine action by 24 donors this past reporting period. This represents a $4 million decrease from last year’s reporting period.

  • This is the first time since 1992 that global mine action funding has not been increased by a significant amount.

  • Twelve countries have ratified or acceded to the Mine Ban Treaty, which brings the total to 145 signatories and 129 accessions or ratifications.
