Over 1,500 Patients Benefit From ICRC Prostheses In 2004 - Angola Press

Luanda, Angola - A total of 1,583 patients, being 75% landmine victims, have received prostheses, and 3,115 others got pairs of crutches, whereas 249 got wheelchairs from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), according to a press release made available to Angop on Monday.

The note adds that the ICRC supports three Health Ministry rehabilitation centres in Luanda, Huambo and Kuito and, since the begining of the its orthopaedic programme in Angola in 1979, over 30,000 prostheses have been manufactured.

The ICRC further says that the assistance provided covers technical and financial support to these three orthopaedic centres, including the manufacture and fitting of prostheses and manufacture of crutches and distribution of wheelchairs.

This international humanitarian institution also says that all these services, including physiotherapy, transport and accommodation, are provided free of charge. In addition to rehabilitation, it adds, the ICRC supports the Angola Red Cross (CVA) mine awareness program in Bie and Benguela provinces.

It finally states that, since January last year, more than 400 communities in eight municipalities were visited and more than 29,898 people were sensitised on landmines danger through presentations, theatre and songs.
