World Cup: German football star shows landmines the red card - ICBL

The 2006 World Cup is not just about football. Fans arriving in Berlin to watch the matches will come across the familiar face of Germany's top scorer Miroslav Klose protesting against the use of landmines from a huge video billboard in a busy intersection across the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and from the pages of the country's newspapers and magazines.

At the beginning of the football world cup the German national player Miroslav Klose is mounting a nationwide advertisement campaign in cooperation with the Action Group Landmine.de.

The currently leading goal scorer in the German Soccer League does not only support the Action Group with his engagement against landmines and for the support of the victims of such weapons, he is also demanding active protests against landmines with it.

Through the advertisement campaign, he is promoting the ongoing signature campaign "One million signatures for a ban on all landmines"which has been supported by over 870,000 German citizens so far.

"We really appreciate Miroslav Klose's engagement. As we face the imminent cutting of funds for mine victim assistance and mine clearance, this support is coming just in time," said Thomas Gebauer, Chairman of the Action Group Landmine.de and executive director of Medico International.

"This way we hope to fill the generally football-enthused members of the German parliament with enthusiasm for a ban against landmines and mine-like weapons (such as cluster munitions) as well," stated Thomas Kuchenmeister Director of the Action Group Landmine.de.

The campaign is being supported by the advertising agency Scholz & Friends Berlin that conceived the motive of the campaign, and by the press agency ddp which provided the picture motive. The Action Group Landmine.de is asking the publishing houses of all magazines and newspapers, as well as the internet providers, to be supportive by sponsoring free adverts.
