Landmines kill two migrants entering Greece - Turkish Press

Two Kurdish clandestine immigrants were killed and another injured by exploding landmines as they crossed a field in Greece near the Turkish border, the Greek army said on Monday.

The three had entered a prohibited zone in Vyssas, in the Evros district next to Greece's far northeastern border with Turkey on Sunday evening, the army said in a statement.

The mines killed two of the immigrants on the spot and seriously injured the other, who was taken to hospital in Didymoteihon, the main town in the district.

The deaths brought to four the number of immigrants killed this year by mines in Greece along its land border with Turkey -- a major transit route for migrants heading for Europe from the Middle East and Asia.

Since 1994, 82 migrants have been killed in Greece by mines and 69 injured, according to tolls added together by AFP.

The army said Sunday's incident happened in a minefield that was surrounded by two barbed wire fences and brightly coloured warning signs in Greek and English.

Greece mined its border with Turkey in 1974.

In April Greece pledged to step up efforts to remove mines from the area, aiming to clear them completely by 2011.

Athens and Ankara in 2003 jointly ratified an international treaty committing countries to destroy their anti-personnel mines.
