Zimbabwe: Landmine Kills Rushinga Boy (12) - The Herald

A 12-YEAR-OLD boy died on the spot when a landmine he had picked up in a minefield exploded in Rushinga.

Mobie Chiutsi -- who had been sent back home because he had not paid school fees -- died on Tuesday last week when he strayed into the minefield. Mashonaland Central police spokesman Inspector Michael Munyikwa said authorities at Mafigu Primary School had sent Chiutsi of Chivere Village home to collect school fees.

"On his way home, he strayed into a minefield where he picked a suspicious object, which later turned out to be a landmine," he said.

It exploded, amputating both his hands and causing serious injuries on the chest.

He died on the spot.

Mr Joshua Kumambo of the same village, who heard the explosion rushed to the scene, where he found Chiutsi's body.

He reported the matter to police who took the body to Chimhanda Hospital.

Last month, a 76-year-old Mukumbura herbalist narrowly escaped death after a landmine exploded as he dug for herbs at Chisodza Village under Chief Chiswiti in the area.

Kauriko Mudekapenda sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Mt Darwin Hospital.
