Survivor Stories
Jean-Claude Bassène - Sénégal
Jean-Claude retired from the police force in 1976. In 1998, he went to a store to buy two pens for his adopted daughters. Walking out of the boutique Jean-Claude stepped on a mine. He lost his right leg. He currently is the president of the Association Sénégalaise des Victimes de Mines (ASVM). Under the auspices of this group, landmine survivors advocate for the ban on antipersonnel mines and for a better life for people with disabilities.
Jean-Claude is a 2002 Raising the Voices participant.
