 Radwan Wawi - Jordan
Radwan was a 45-year old builder when he was injured by a landmine on April 19, 2000. He and his family (4 boys and 1 girl) were preparing to have a picnic in the Jordan Valley. He was clearing a spot to place a blanket by sweeping up stones with his arms. There was a landmine mixed in with the stones, and it exploded in his arms. The explosion caused him to have both his arms amputated below the elbow. His wife saw the explosion from the truck she and their children were riding in. When she jumped from the truck to run to help him, she broke her leg.
Radwan was visited in the hospital by LSN staff (first by Director Adnan Al Aboudi, and then by Outreach Worker Majdi Quweider). As a man who had made his living as a builder, Radwan looked at where his hands should be, shook his head and said, “What am I going to do?” He had been given cosmetic prostheses, but they really didn’t help him to do what he wanted most: to care for himself independently.
After giving some thought to finding a new way to make a living, Radwan believed that he could be successful at operating a small grocery shop. Radwan worked with an LSN outreach worker to prepare a business plan for the shop. They decided to stock the shop with the kinds of items Radwan’s family and friends use, and to locate the shop adjacent to Radwan’s home. The shop is doing well, and Radwan is well on his way to reclaiming his life.
