Phan Thi Hoai - Vietnam
On her way to work at the Quang Binh Pharmacy Company in 1970, Hoai’s leg was wounded after a series of bombs were dropped on her village. The wound became infected and her left leg had to be amputated.
She eventually married and had children, and continued to sell pharmaceuticals in Bo Trach District. Hoai’s husband died of a serious illness in 1988, leaving her with young children. Despite her extraordinary efforts to remain positive and support her family, her situation deteriorated and she found her self in desperate economic circumstances.
In 2004, LSN-Vietnam staff was introduced to Hoai. An Outreach Worker, also an amputee, gave her peer support and encouraged her involvement in a social support group. Working together, she and the Outreach Worker developed a plan to help improve the conditions for her home and her family. In addition to selling pharmaceuticals, Hoai had been raising pigs to sell. Unfortunately, the pigs had been living in the kitchen, which was not sanitary for the family. She and the Outreach Worker decided that a new, clean kitchen was required, as well as an upgraded pig shelter to ensure that the family remained healthy and for Hoai to increase her income. LSN provided the materials and equipment needed to achieve these two goals. She sold some of the pigs to earn money and she has been able to save enough to buy a water pump and other essentials to provide a better home and income for her family.
