Guadalupe Muñóz - El Salvador
Guadalupe Munoz was born in 1975. When she was 10 years old she worked cutting cotton. With her family, she would walk up and down paths in the fields. One day, the field exploded under her when she stepped on a landmine. “I remember that they took me out of a big hole.” She lost her right leg. Because her family felt they could not take care of her, she was sent to live with relatives in San Salvador. She did chores and got the opportunity to go to school up to the eighth grade.
In 2001, she met an LSN Outreach Worker. Guadalupe’s main need, she said, was to have her prostheses repaired, and to also repair her family’s house that was seriously damaged by an earthquake. She had been slightly injured in the earthquake, but, worse to her, was that her prosthesis was broken, and her house had no roof, so everything was always wet.
LSN provided emotional support, and helped her get her prosthesis repaired. The repair helped her get back to work. The Outreach Worker also looked for ways to get the house repaired. When no help was found, LSN gave direct support to pay for the roof repair. Now Guadalupe works for her brother, who did more repairs on the house. He sews and she is responsible for packing the products and preparing them for distribution.
Guadalupe is now 30 years old. She is married and has two children and is now able to care for her children and family. Because of LSN, she has a future and is proud of herself
