Douglas P. McCormack

As a Partner in the Firm's national Public Law and Policy Strategies Group, Mr. McCormack counsels clients on a broad range of public policy and regulatory matters in the areas of legislative and regulatory advocacy, strategic planning and strategy development, grassroots mobilization, public sector partnership development, coalition building and public policy management.

A resident in the Firm's Washington, DC office, Mr. McCormack represents early-stage companies, trade associations, medical centers and health systems, health care companies, professional medical societies and nonprofit organizations, employing a multidisciplinary approach to advance client policy objectives at all levels of government. Substantively, Mr. McCormack focuses his practice in the areas of health care; medical research and public health; e-health; public and private finance, including the federal budget and appropriations processes; and technology and homeland security.

Mr. McCormack has been recognized widely for his work in Washington, representing national and global nonprofit health and disability organizations, including some of the largest and most widely known foundations and associations, including the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation; the Lance Armstrong Foundation; Epilepsy Foundation of America the Landmine Survivors Network and the YMCA of the USA. Currently, Mr. McCormack works on behalf of several national health associations, including nonprofits, and provides guidance on matters such as crisis, issues and organizational management, and strategic planning.

As federal partnership development has emerged as an effective approach for advancing commercial, trade association and nonprofit priorities in Washington, Mr. McCormack has successfully leveraged public policy activity and efforts in a manner that is bottom-line focused. With particular expertise in the Federal budget and appropriations processes, Mr. McCormack has advanced dozens of creative funding initiatives through the legislative process resulting in targeted budget increases and earmarked funding directed toward specific client priorities. He has also employed this approach effectively in positioning new and emerging technologies for use or demonstration by federal departments and agencies, including in the area of homeland security.

Additionally, Mr. McCormack has worked with growth companies in the technology and health care sectors on a range of matters. This work includes advising several E-Health ventures, and his service on the advisory board of an E-Health company focused on the delivery of medical equipment and supplies for persons with disabilities and severe chronic conditions.

Mr. McCormack practiced in the Government Relations and Health Practice Groups at the Washington law firm of Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn, prior to joining Sonnenschein in 2002.

Contributing to his experience in effectively developing strategies to solve client public policy challenges, Mr. McCormack worked professionally, prior to attending law school at the American University in Washington, in the management of grassroots, issue and public referenda campaigns, as well as strategic and crisis communications initiatives at the local, state and national levels. Additionally, in political candidate campaigns, he has worked at various levels of local federal and international campaigns.
