Country`s Demining Process Records Progress - Angola Press
Luanda, 01/06 - The process of demining in the country recorded significant progress in 2005, with the clearing of unexploded explosives over a territorial extension of 7.470,327 square metres.
Data supplied by the National Demining Institute (INAD), as part of the year-end appraisal, say the operation was carried out by seven brigades using obsolete equipment left by MONUA, former United Nations Observation Mission, aggravated by transportation constraints.
Last year, 23.723,728 square metres of area with landmine were identified, having been destroyed 622 anti-personnel mines, 73 anti-tank mines, added to 2,286 other unexploded explosives, also known as "UXOs".
The search, demining and destruction of ordnances was carried out in the provinces of Bié, Malanje, Moxico, Huambo, Kuando-Kubango, Lunda-Sul, Kwanza-Sul, Bengo, Uíge, Kwanza-Norte, Huíla and Benguela.
INAD also ran awareness campaigns against the accidents and incidents with landmines, having mobilised about 24,000 people.
In 2006, the sector is considering to intensify the demining operations, with a view to the elections and need to secure free flow of people and goods around the country.
This can be more easily achieved with the creation of the Executive Demining Commission, that has already formalised an Operational Demining Plan, submitted to the Cabinet Council for approval.
