LSN Athletes Participate in a Variety of Sports
When Edgar Mareno lost his leg to a landmine in Colombia at the age of 16, his recovery was fairly arduous. His health before his accident had not been good, and he had a great deal of physical pain and mental anguish. It took him a long time to find the strength to face his new reality and find his optimism. He discovered cycling, and trained and began winning competitions. He also participated in, and graduated from LSN’s “Raising The Voices” campaign. He works with the Colombian government on economic re-integration of persons with disability. Edgar has become Colombia’s para-cycling champion. In fact, he is headed to Athens this summer to compete in cycling at the XII Paralympic Games.

And he isn’t the only member of LSN’s family who competes successfully in sports.LSN places a strong emphasis on participation in sports as an important component in recovery and continued good health. Many of our “graduates” and country team members are world-class athletes in their sports. The Bosnia-Herzegovina sitting volleyball team is ranked first in Europe, and second in the world. The Jordan amputee swimming team is the only one of its kind in the country. The LSN-Vietnam Director, Nguyen Hoa Hoc, earned a silver medal in weight lifting and bronze in the javelin toss at the most recent ASEAN Para Games, held in December. Good luck to all the athletes who will head to Athens September 17 – 28 to compete in the XII Paralympic Games.
