Deminer Killed in Yemen
Mr. Seleh Mohammad Al Annasi, 28, a deminer in Yemen, was killed on April 17, 2004. Mr. Seleh was clearing mines in Minefield No. 2, in Jabalul Shieba Mountain, Marish Village, Al Nadira District. It was around 9:00 in the morning when Mr. Seleh took a break from his duties to sit on a rock in the minefield. The rock was up high, where he had a nice view of the surrounding field. Suddenly, the rock fractured, and Mr. Seleh was pitched to the ground some distance below. He hit a Russian-made landmine that had been dormant for decades. He died on the way to the hospital. Mr. Seleh was an excellent deminer who followed all safety regulations. The night before he died, Mr. Seleh dreamed that he found a mine. He leaves a wife and three children under age seven.
